注意すべき数詞の読み方・表し方

「分数」「小数」「数式」「西暦・時刻」「電話番号」「温度」｢金額」などの数詞は、読み方や表し方が少し難しいです。どうやって読むのか、どうやって表すのかについて確認していきましょう。

分数の表し方

分数は分子を基数で読んで、分母を序数で読みます。分子が2以上のときは分母が複数になります。

1/3 ＝ a (one) third
2/3 ＝ two thirds
1/2 ＝ a (one) half
1/4 ＝ a (one) quarter
3/4 ＝ three quarters

ピザとかで「クウォータ～」ってのを注文するから、わかりますね。

小数の表し方

小数は小数点を point と読んで、小数点以下は数字を1つずつ読みます。

12.38 ＝ twelve point three eight

数式の表し方

2＋3＝5
Two plus three equals five. / Two and three are (is, make) five.
5－2＝3
Five minus two equals three. / Two from five is (leaves) three.
6×8＝48
Six (multiplied) by eight equals forty-eight. / Six times eight is forty-eight.
12÷3＝4
Twelve divided by three equals four. / Three into twelve goes (is) four.

数式は無難に左側で覚えておくのがよさそうですね。でも右側も味があって捨てがたいなぁ。

西暦の表し方

1957年 / nineteen fifty-seven
7月4日 / July (the) fourth

時刻の表わし方

6時30分
six thirty / half passed six
9時45分
nine forty-five / a quarter to ten
8時15分
eight fifteen / a quarter past(after) eight

時刻の右側の表現は面白いですね。「9時45分」を「あと15分で10時」とあらわすんですね。

電話番号の読み方

電話番号は数字を1つずつ区切って読みます。数字の 0 は「オウ」とか「ゼロ」と読みます。

温度の表し方

33℃ (摂氏33度) / thirty-three degrees centigrade
96゜Ｆ (華氏96度) / ninety-six degrees Fahrenheit

金額の表し方

$7.30 ＝ seven dollars and thirty cents
￡4.56 ＝ four pounds and fifty-six pence
1300円＝ one thousand, three hundred yen (yen は複数形にならないことに注意！)

もう数詞で注意することはないですか?

普通「hundred / thousand」は複数形になりません。しかし、こういうときは s をつけて次のように表します。

hundreds of ～ / 何百の～
thousands of ～ / 何千の～
millions of ～ / 何百万の～
dozens of ～ / 数十の～
scores of ～ / 多数の～

There are hundreds of books in his room.
彼の部屋には何百もの本があります。

漠然と数が多いということをあらわす表現なんだね。

時間や距離・金額などをあらわす複数形の名詞でも、単数扱いにする場合があります。

Two hours is too long to wait.
2時間は待てないよ

前が複数形なのに、be動詞が is にするのかぁ。「2時間」というのを一つのかたまりと考えているんだね。
