仮定法の重要表現を教えてよ。
早速、見ていきますね。特に重要なのは「as if」「it’s time」などを使った仮定法です。それぞれ例文を使いながら確認していきましょう。
as if＋仮定法
as if (though)＋仮定法 / ～である (あった) かのように
He speaks as if he were a teacher.
彼はまるで先生のように話します。
彼はまるで先生のように話します。
as if の節は仮定法だから、be動詞が were になっていることに注意ですね。
「～がなければ」の仮定法
「～がなければ」の表現も大切ですね。
If it were not for ～, / ～がなければ・If it had not been for, / ～がなかったなら
あっ、それって「Without ～」や「But for ～」で書きかえられるよね。
If it were not for ～ と without ～・but for ～ の書きかえ
If it were not for water, no living things could live.
＝ Without water, the living thing might not exist.
＝ But for water, the living thing might not exist.
水がなければ生き物は存在できないだろうなぁ。
＝ Without water, the living thing might not exist.
＝ But for water, the living thing might not exist.
水がなければ生き物は存在できないだろうなぁ。
it is time＋仮定法
この仮定法の表現もよく出ますね。
It is (high / about) time＋(that)＋仮定法過去 / もうそろそろ～すべきだ
It is high time you were in bed.
もう寝る時間でしょ。
もう寝る時間でしょ。
これも仮定法なんですか。うーん。「もう寝ている時間なのになぁ」という、嫌味な感じなんですかね。
