them が何を指すか、という問題ですね。代名詞が指すものは、直前にあることが多いんですよね。直前の文を見るってことを考えると…… (1) them が指すものは (ウ) the old fence かな?
指示語の直前の文に注目するのもそうですが、他にもこういうところに注目するといいですよ。
今回の問題の指示代名詞は them だから、複数ですよね。(ウ) the old fence は単数ですから、どうもダメな感じですね。
うーん…そうするとどうなんだろう? my father も単数になるしなぁ。あっ、その前の英文に my mother があるということは、二人合わせて考えたらいいのかな？ 正解は (ア) my parents ですね。
